Titled “Jonas Mekas” this pop art and neo-expressionist painting pays tribute to the legendary avant-garde filmmaker and artist Jonas Mekas, reimagining his profile as a living archive of memories, culture, and creative freedom. His silhouette is constructed from handwritten phrases, graffiti, symbols, logos, and layered textures, reflecting the fragmented beauty of memory and the rhythm of everyday life.

A vivid ultramarine blue portrait dominates the composition. Scattered throughout are references to Vilnius, New York, peace, film, and FLUXUS artistic rebellion, weaving together the two cities and cultures that defined Mekas’s life. A soaring stork in the upper corner symbolizes freedom, exile, and the endless search for home, while multiple eyes hidden within the composition suggest the filmmaker’s unique way of seeing the world through both the camera lens and personal memory.

Rich with glossy and super mat layers, the painting blurs the boundary between portrait and visual diary. It celebrates Jonas Mekas not only as the godfather of avant-garde cinema, but as a poet of everyday moments, transforming his likeness into a vibrant map of creativity, resilience, and artistic legacy.
